The things I do to myself

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."- Howard Thurman

Arranged for 7 appointments on Friday to do a favour for a friend. Rushed from destination to destination from morning, before finally returning to office at 5pm. Beat back the paperwork mountain until 7pm.

Participated in the Onsight Lead Climbing Competition on Saturday. Because of ties in the U-19 Women category and other delays, the timings for the subsequent categories snowballed. The event finally ended at 8pm and I was thoroughly drained. I eventually ended up 4th place, which led me to ask myself - was it worth it? A day of breathing in chalk and dust wasn't particularly kind to my throat. It ended up sore and itchy in the aftermath. All that effort, but nothing to show for it.

I assisted in a course on Sunday in a bid to earn some extra pocket money, to make up for my sad income. From 10am to 5pm, I plastered a smile on my face and pressed the 'play' button that I've come to rely on so many times. Thankfully, the lead instructor was fantastic so I didn't have to use my voice too much.
After having barely rested for the weekend, it's back to work on Monday morning.

Sometimes I ask, 'Why do I do this to myself?". And then I'm reminded of the quote from Howard Thurman, and I press on.

  1. 4th is a position anyone doing as much work as you can only dream of. But you don't dream, you do it. Whether it's worth it or not, only you know, and only your decision matters.

  2. Thanks for the encouragement!

On a side note, my boss and some of my peers asked me how I did the competition. They were quite happy for me upon hearing the result. In fact, from how they raved about it, they almost made it out that I've won or something. Looks like I must really learn to take myself less seriously.
